Why is Impostor Syndrome Prevalent in High Achievers

  • 28th Sep'21

Impostor syndrome is a phenomenon that causes a feeling of incompetency and a lack of self-worth. Low self-esteem, anxiety and depression, etc., are the primary reasons behind  impostor syndrome. Any person can have impostor syndrome. However, high achievers are most likely to get impostor syndrome. High achievers are individuals who are well known for their skills, talent, and even personality. For example, former United States first lady Michelle Obama and American author Maya Angelou have suffered from impostor syndromes despite their outstanding success in life.

Angelou once said, “I have written eleven books, but each time I think, ‘Uh oh, they’re going to find out now. I’ve run a game on everybody, and they’re going to find me out.” So likewise, many people raise an important question – Is impostor syndrome prevalent in high achievers? Yes, high achievers are most likely to get impostor syndrome, and here are some reasons to explain why it is so.

Why is Impostor Syndrome Prevalent in High Achievers?

Following are the reasons that explain why high achievers are most likely to get impostor syndrome:

Perception is an ultimate tool when it comes to combating or suffering from impostor syndrome. Those who deal with impostor syndrome suffer from the perception that they are not good enough. A feeling of perception can easily creep into high achievers causing them to fear failure. It creates a fear that if they fail, they will get exposed that everything they achieved so far was a fraud, a sham.

Skill and Talent

High achievers are skillful and talented individuals. Many of them have earned several accolades and accomplishments. However, it is the same high achievers most likely to get impostor syndrome. It occurs mainly due to a lack of self-belief in their skill and talent as they leave no room for failure and imperfection. They believe everything should come to them naturally.
