Is there a positive side of Impostor Syndrome?

  • 26th Feb'22

Have you ever felt like you don’t fit into the current role at work?  If you have, then you’re not alone. Impostor syndrome was identified in 1978 as the feeling of being incapable and imagining their success only because of luck. According to the International Journal of Behavioral Science, approximately 70% of individuals suffer from impostor feelings at some point in their lifetime.

Who is affected by Impostor Syndrome?

Most researchers say that women are impacted by impostor syndrome more when compared to men. However, men also suffer from impostor syndrome, but they don’t discuss it. Often, people feel like they aren’t qualified for their roles. Even well-known figures like Maya Angelou and Tina Fey have suffered from impostor syndrome. Maya Angelou said, “I have written eleven books, but each time I think, uh oh, they’re going to find out now. I’ve run a game on everybody, and they’re going to find me out.”

The Experience of Impostor Syndrome

There is no one single answer to your question: why do people experience impostor syndrome? But researchers have agreed that it is associated with the individual's personality traits. For instance, people who are perfectionists have faced these issues. The feeling of inadequacy that grew into people from a young age is also a reason. The fear of new challenges and the need for promotions can even trigger your impostor thoughts. People who have talented siblings are often compared and get stuck with impostor feelings.

How is Impostor Syndrome a positive thing?

On the internet, you can find many articles that discuss the negatives of impostor syndrome. But honestly, there are some positive sides to Impostor Syndrome. Here are some reasons why:

  • You get chances to challenge yourself

You will be more interested in personal growth and development when you have impostor syndrome.  You will take steps to push yourself into new and unexplored challenges as people don’t risk doing new things and feel comfortable with daily routines. To achieve your goals, you must push yourself outside your comfort zone.

  • It keeps your ego limited

The impostor syndrome is also a good thing as it will keep your ego in check which will not allow your ego to overinflate. When you have this ego, you tend to avoid new challenges and settle for a comfortable life. But with impostor feelings, you will try to acquire new skills and experience.

  • It signals that you're gaining experience:

Aristotle says, “The more you know, the more you know you don't know." However, several experts agree that people who accomplish more things tend to have impostor syndrome. This way, you can understand that it’s a sign for learning new things and getting more knowledge.

How can you deal with it?

  • Find a support system

Talk to your friends and family about your situation. Tell the truth to people who believe in you because all their encouragement will help you. The reviews and appreciation from close ones will help you get rid of impostor syndrome.

  • Stop comparing yourself

We come across many new people on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram every day. Most people feel so easy to compare their lives to others. You must know that everyone has their own flaws and no one is perfect. Embrace your strength, trust your strength, and celebrate your success.

  • Tune out the noise

Generally, humans have around 60,000 to 80,000 thoughts every day. Try to have positive thoughts and leave the negativity out. We all have experienced self-doubt at some point, but no matter what, just keep moving forward. First, value your work and reward yourself for maintaining a positive life.

  • Understand that being uncomfortable is normal

Most successful entrepreneurs are not comfortable with certain things in life. The same concept is applicable to the person who is suffering from impostor syndrome. Understand that life is uncertain, so we need to be always ready for new challenges. Your comfort zone will never allow you to grow, just get out of it.

To Summarize

At any point in life, if you feel the symptoms of impostor syndrome just acknowledge it, but don’t quit. Keep moving ahead to achieve your dreams. We all have to face different traumas in walks of life. And impostor syndrome also can approach you, the fear of self-doubt may emerge from the shadows. Remember, life can be tough, but all your efforts will pay off one day. Meanwhile, don’t give up, keep hustling, stay focused, and you’ll achieve your dreams.
