4 Actionable Steps To Build Your Personal Brand

  • 23rd Sep'22

In 2022, branding has adopted a new face. Now you are not just selling products or providing services. Consumers want to know about you, the backstory, how it all started, and why it failed. How did you pick it up from there?

This brings us to one of my most discussed topics-personal branding. I have lost count of how many times I have discussed this topic with my peers, in business meetings and in several panel discussions. Do you know what is the best part? It never gets old! In the last few decades, there has been a massive shift in personal branding.

So, let us today go through the complete guide to building your personal brand. Who knows what strategy you'll get from this?

1. Establish your brand’s presence online

You know, when I am at a speaking session, I exclusively focus on one thing, which is building a personal brand. It is one of the most effective ways to establish an environment of trust and build rapport with your community, yet I have seen many business owners fail to understand this. Do you know why? Business owners mistake this for self-promotion. This is a question for all the business owners reading this: Have you done  your research and followed suitable tips for building your personal brand? I am sure most of your answers are ‘yes.’Then why do you shy away from working on your personal brand?

Many of my clients share their concerns with me that they can’t manage various platforms all at once for their personal branding. So my solution to them is to start with your personal website. Even if you are active on only one platform, you should work on your website. A personal website is an excellent additional platform for your business to promote your brand and enhance how clients see you.

Let me tell you that websites are also extremely effective only for those with personal brands since they present a clear and consistent picture of your brand.

2. Align with your purpose

I started my personal brand journey to help others achieve their goals and ambitions in life. If you have been consistently following my content, you must have come across such content on my website as well as other platforms.

Working with various businesses made me realize the mistakes they made with their personal brand. Either they didn’t have any or they created content without any purpose.

As a business owner, you need to take care of one thing. Everything you create, whether it be a blog post, a podcast episode, or a YouTube video, needs to be tied to the core principle of your business. Your customers can relate to you easily if you have a defined and distinct online appearance.

3. Define your audience

Imagine you need grocery items and you go to a clothing store. It doesn’t sound right. Is it? Everyone knows there are particular stores or places for buying certain things. Similarly, when you are building your personal brand, you must ask yourself some questions like-

  • To whom do you want to sell your services/products?
  • Who will benefit from connecting with your brand?

These are some basic questions. Once you have a clear idea of your target audience, you can definitely expand it more accordingly.

I know most of you are still struggling with understanding your target audience. If it has been more than a year, then I strongly recommend it’s time to revise your personal brand strategy.

4. Narrate your story

I often get this query from employees, businesses, and small business owners: "Should we tell a children’s story or a personal story? You see, storytelling for your personal brand is not always a direct story. It means you are building up a narrative of curiosity for your audience.

Stories with happy or sad endings are always liked by the audience. We can all relate to someone's path on an emotional level by following it. You will find various tips for building your personal brand online. But as per my experience, storytelling still rules. You will ask why? In simple terms, it encourages deeper understanding and enhances empathy. The best part is that you are not restricted to one way; there are several ways to communicate your messages, your company's history, and your experiences.

Revamp your personal brand as it grows

You must not forget that you are in the digital era. Every day, thousands of people are generating content and experimenting with it. I have been working consistently on my personal brand for a few years now, and I reinvent the strategies according to the changing times. You can read several blogs on tips for building your personal brand, but that won’t lead to actionable steps towards your brand. As you meet new individuals, discover new networking possibilities, and advance in your profession, change your persona accordingly. Create a brand that allows you to shine, as long as it reflects your work life.
